I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I 3.5 Excavatio~ Excavation shall be performed by any recognized method of good practice to complete the job in the most expeditious manner. contractor shall take precautions to insure no damage to existing facilities or equipment. Excavation shall include all materials found within the designated limits for excavation. 3.6 Fill Materials Fill placed within structure and paving areas should consist of approved materials which are free of organic matter and debris. Any available and suitable granular materials shall be reserved for use under structures and street paving areas. Low plastioity cohesive soil or granular soil should be used for fill. The liquid limit of the low plasticity fill should be less than 45 percent, and the plasticity index should be less than 22 percent. 3.7 Grading The area indicated shall be graded to the subgrades as shown on the plans with special attention to proper drainage. All fills and embankments shall be in accordance with the following: (1) Embankments shall be constructed in uniform lifts or layers not exceeding eight inches of loose fill and laid parallel to the finished surface. (2) watering shall be provided, if necessary, to obtain optimum moisture content, all to be done as directed by the Engineer. 3.8 Compaction Any material in the subgrade incapable of compaction to densities as listed below shall be removed and replaced with acceptable material. (1) For streets - 95% standard Proctor Density. (2) For unpaved areas, embankments, fills, and other areas as specified - 90% Standard Proctor Density. (3) For floor slab support in structure areas - 95% stasndard Proctor Density. (4) Undisturbed subgrade in cuts will not be compacted unless the Engineer determines that compaction is necessary. 2200-3
