Channel 4000 - Hometown - Task force unveils community center designs

While the site is the group's first choice, task force
members said they were uncertain if it would be
available for a community center project.

"It's an amazing structure," Jabs said. "Once you
know what's all in there, you're just shocked. It's
incredible. It would offer so many new recreational
opportunities in Richfield.

"I think once people see what we saw, it's got a pretty
good chance of being approved."

The preliminary design, which was unveiled during
last week's meeting at the water plant, has two levels.
The first floor would include most of the amenities. A
recreational pool complete with water slides and a
gymnasium with two full-length basketball courts
would take up the largest space. Eight meeting rooms
would divide the pool from a banquet hall. The
dimensions of each room were not yet determined.

To the north of the gymnasium, 'offices, a teen center,
a youth game room and a kid's play area are proposed.
An aerobic room and locker rooms would separate
the pool from the gymnasiurp.

The upper floor would include a running track,
weight room and waiting area.

Mark Anderson, project manager for SEH Inc. -- the
architectural firm that prepared the designs -- offered
details of the exterior design of the building for the
task force.

The structure would be close to 30 feet high at its
peak but the elevation would vary, Anderson said.
Two pool decks with canopies and an outdoor plaza
by the banquet hall would jut out from the main
building.

The task force and architects spent a large portion of
the meeting discussing the color of the building.
Anderson proposed an earthy color for most of the
building with the aqua-colored trim. Some task force
members thought it might be better to incorporate the
city colors of purple and blue into the design.

Anderson said he would explore both ideas.

http://www.wcco.com/community/sun/articles/ri/new/sunrinew-990629-1 03259- 249994 ,html

7/5/99
