Human Rights Commission Minutes
October 15, 2014 – Draft Minutes
b.Civility Training Update
89
90
Commissioner Carey stated she had met with Carey Watts, Activity Director for the County
91
Library. They are willing to partner with the HRC and allow use of their activity room for the
92
training. Sue to their commitments on Saturday mornings they would recommend scheduling
93
Saturday afternoons or Sunday afternoons from 1:00 – 4:30. They would also be willing to put
94
the information in their newsletter and promote the event but the deadline for the newsletter
95
would be the end of the month prior to the month before the newsletter goes out and the
96
newsletter goes out every two (2) months. She proposed the Civility Training be scheduled for a
97
Saturday or Sunday in April. The Civility Organization is booked the first weekend in April.
98
Ms. Collins had reached out to the Arts and Cultural Legacy Fund for funding. They would like
99
to see how this could tie into reading and possible Community-Wide Read. She recommended
100
choosing one of the books that would be used for the Civility Training and focus on this by
101
offering a chance to meet and discuss the book after the event. The Arts and Cultural Legacy
102
Fund could potentially fund books for this event so that those interested in the book club
103
meetings would not have to purchase the book. The Library is also willing to donate
104
approximately $2000 for book for the training. Based on discussions with other groups it sounds
105
like there is a lot of interest in the training and meeting the minimum number of attendees. The
106
Library has on online signup process so there would not be a need to have people RSVP. Once
107
the maximum number is reached the signup will close. She stated she has also reached out to the
108
Minnesota Council of Nonprofits, the League of Minnesota Cities, and the St. Paul Foundation to
109
request funding. She asked if the Commission would like to approach the Community
110
Engagement Commission to discuss partnering on the event.
111
112
Chair Groff stated it might be helpful for Commissioner Carey to attend a CEC meeting and ask
113
them to help promote the event but they have the same resources. Vice Chair Becker is on the
114
CEC as well and could bring this up to the Commission.
115
116
Commissioner Slade asked if the event could be advertised on the City’s electronic board.
117
118
Ms. Collins stated this could be done and the City could also put together a flyer for the event.
119
This could be added to the Newsletter and there is also an email update for those that subscribe.
120
121
Commissioner Thao clarified the Ramsey County Library would be contributing $2000 so this
122
left a funding gap of $500.
123
124
Commissioner Carey stated the Library had not set an amount yet but would be willing to
125
contribute up to $2000. She would confirm this with Ms. Watts. If 60 people attend then the
126
total would be $3000 and she would recommend an additional amount for refreshments.
127
128
Ms. Collins stated she would contact Byerlys and see if they would donate any goods. She stated
129
if the Roseville Community Fund might be inclined to provide the additional funding if the
130
Library is willing to fund $2000.
131
132
