After site visits and a review of the <br />proposed alternate, we are unable to support the proposed design change for this infiltration area. <br />We wanted to share our reasons for staying with the approved rain garden design. <br /> <br />It We have always looked at the storm water improvements included in this development as <br />amenities for the neighborhood you are building. That is how we approached the <br />reconstruction of the Arona Pond, that is how we look at the rain garden in the north park. <br />The garden will be planted with a variety of prairie plant species, which will add to the <br />beauty of the park. It will also attract wildlife, birds, butterflies, and dragonflies. In <br />contrast, the proposed sump does not have the same benefits, in fact has an 18" plastic <br />pipe sticking up out of the ground. Also, many of these plants require a moist soil to <br />grow. lfthe alternate design is constructed, the area would likely be sod. <br /> <br />It The entire garden will be landscaped with prairie plants. One of the benefits of a rain <br />garden is that the phosphorus in the runoff provides nutrients to the plants. Many plants <br />need phosphorus to grow, the garden removes phosphorus from the storm water, <br />preventing it from being pushed further down stream into Lake Johanna. <br /> <br />It This is not an open pond, the rain garden is designed to retain the water for a 0.34 inch <br />rain. A rain event greater than 0.34 inches will over flow into the catch basin that is <br />located to the south of the garden. The soils on this site are ideal for a rain garden. The <br />approved design is for a 140 square feet (14 x 10 foot) area to have water sitting in it for <br />no more than 72 hours. Standing water will be no more than 12 inches at its deepest point. <br /> <br />. Also, the garden is located on the south side of the pathway. As designed, the water will <br />not flood the pathway. Once the water reaches the elevation of the catch basin it will <br />drain into the storm sewer and down to the pond on the south side of the site. <br /> <br />2660 Civic Center Drive .:.
