Human Rights Commission Minutes
April 15, 2015
Commissioner Carey clarified only what the State allows for participation would be forwarded to
them for consideration in their contest.
Chair Groff stated this is correct but the City could still have all the other categories at the City
level.
Mr. Collins asked if the HRC would want to part with the League if they do not shift on the time
line. The City has always submitted an essay to the State contest.
Commissioner Singleton stated cities have the option of doing their own but if the time line does
not fit with the State contest, then they would not be able to participate.
Chair Groff stated the participants all have to answer the same prompt from the State in order to
be eligible for that contest.
Commissioner Christiansen asked if the State also specified how many and what references to
use when answering.
Ms. Collins stated the last prompt did have specific references but this is something that can be
changed with each prompt that is submitted or approved.
Chair Groff stated the League is looking for input because they know the Essay Contest needs to
be reviewed. The current recommendation is a good starting document.
c.
