While noting it may not be the best situation,
Councilmember Laliberte asked staff what would cause them to have problems in
using the maintenance facility yard for this winter season.
Mr. Culver advised that while the maintenance yard had been used for outside
storage of some equipment and machines as appropriate, this option proved diffi-
cult in the need to continually move that equipment around to gain access other
pieces and when loading trucks with sand and sale. While staff is able to work
around that inconvenience, Mr. Culver noted that it increased potential accidents
when moving things around and possibly backing into something, given the lim-
ited maneuverability with that inside and outside storage.
Councilmember McGehee noted the a
rently housing a Bearcat and boat, and
boat rescues and the other equipment
haps another jurisdiction or agency co
ville. Since this would provide an ovc
asked if staff had looked into that optic
vailability of a bay in the fire station, cur -
suggested since Ramsey County performed
belonged to the area S.W.A.T. team, per-
uld store that equipment rather than Rose-
rhead bay door, Councilmember McGehee
n at all.
City Manager Trudgeon noted that alternative storage would be needed for those
items currently stored in that bay; and further questioned if the available space
would prove sufficient for the City's storage needs. Mr. Trudgeon also ques-
tioned the integrity of Fire Department operations next to that storage (e.g. mate-
rials and pipes) and safety of those coming and going in the building, as well as
access and security at all times the Public Works Department employees would
need to access things, which could lead to unsafe operations for those not typical-
ly involved in fire station and emergency operations.
While recognizing that the Fairview Avenue fire station may be inconvenient for
the Public Works Department, Councilmember McGehee opined that it would be
big enough and may be less expensive to rent some space for the Historical Socie-
ty rather than warehouse space.
City Manager Trudgeon responded that the Fairview fire station was already full
of Parks & Recreation Department storage items, as well as Historical Society
files that were stored there, but certainly not functional long-term. Mr. Trudgeon
clarified that staff had shuffled things around as much as possible, but the Fair-
view fire station was full already; and noted the City Council's previous discus-
sions for a long-term solution indicating they wanted to get it cleared out in order
to put the building on the market.
