Essay #85
regarciless of their skin color. As a resuli:, the initiatives tken by President Kennedy and
completed by President Johnson not only ended the oppression of colared people, lut alsa rnade
the U.S, a better place to live zn £ar minorities for generations to come.
Voting is a powerful privilege that influences initiatives, propositions, and laws. For
i:nstance, before same-sex marriage became aederal law, Minnesota was one of the states
allowing this pzctice. It was legalized because about 'if'ty three percent of the state's voters
decided this outcome in 2012, This referendum shows that popular vating is powerful in making
a difference in the rules govrning people, Thus, in order for state and federal governments to
oerate the way most people want, we must all vote, but this is not happening. '
The main reason why people do ot vota is because they think that their votes do not
couni. This belief stems from the fact that in the U,S. states and federal governments are run by
an elected majority pazty other than the people themselves. Thus, the vaies of the citizen.s are
only counted for popularity to see what most of thezn believe in. For exannple, citizens do not
directly vote a president into ofiice. Only the vates of the Electoral Collage couzit toward this
goal. Since the slectoral votes do not lave to gree with the popular vote, many people think that
voting is useless. Ta change this and promote voting, we should allow citizens to fu11y control
tle outcome oi elections, thereby eliminating the electoral votes. This means that the ctizens and
government ofitcials would have equal voting power. By doing this, the apinions of everyose
would be accounted toward making i'inal decisions. Voting would aso become more of an
obligation for the people because their votes could become the deciding factor in an election,
Tn addition, voting can be promoted by having s,me-day voter registration in every state.
Same-day voter ragistration mean that you can register to vote on the same day voting occurs,
