Eliie Thor
Sth - FZoseville Area Middle School
Crystal Archer
2nd Place
Hurriari Ri lits Essav
Article 21 of the Universal Daclaration of Human Rights states'hat everyone has the
right to take part in the government, which we do by voting. `loting is a important right because
it gives people the power to design a government s they sae fit and to bring on changes in the
governing laws, However less than sixty percent of eligible voters in the United States (U.S.)
refrain irom their right to election, I believe thai making the papular vote more va.luable than it
currently is and having same-day voter registration in every state will increase voting.
Democracy is founded on the notion that a country is ran by the free will of its people. In
the U.S. this system of government is practiced by selecting government of£'icials, known as
sentors and representatives, via popular votes to administer state and/or federal affairs, Once in
office, these individuals perform importnt tasks such as: debating popular issues that give rise to
changes in or new laws, allocating proper funds to government offices, choasing the next
president by casting electoral votes, etc. Hence, voting for these government officials becomes
crucial since their actions will determine the future of this country. For example, the Democratic
candidate, John F. Iennedy, was elected president in 1961. During his short presidency, he
initiated civil rights bill that was signed into a law knawn as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by
his successor, Preszdent Lyndon B. Johnson. This law ended an era of r,cial segregation under
the Jim Crow Laws for colored people. This change in the U.S. Constitution was possible
because the bill earned supermaj ority votes in Congress, This histozic event illustrates the
importance o£voting as this action triggered a cascade of events that change the U. S, for the
better, During that time, the majority of U,S. citizens elected Liemocratic ofcials who used their
elecioral votes to choose a president with a strong interest in equality among all citizens
