Human Rights Commission Minutes <br />January 20, 2016 – Draft Minutes <br />Page 6 of 9 <br />225 <br />Commissioner Carey suggested having a representative from the Karen community attend a <br />226 <br />Commission meeting so they can discuss ways the Commission could help the community. <br />227 <br />228 <br />Chair Groff stated he would contact the KOM and request they attend a Commission meeting. <br />229 <br />230 <br />Commissioner Slade asked if there was space in the parcel the City was considering for <br />231 <br />community gardens. <br />232 <br />233 <br />Ms. Collins stated the International Institute and the KOM has located space for community <br />234 <br />gardens within walking space of the apartment buildings. <br />235 <br />236 <br />d.Review 2016 Calendar of Events <br />237 <br />238 <br />Chair Groff stated the essays are due February 1. <br />239 <br />240 <br />Ms. Collins stated they would be available for the Commission by February 10. <br />241 <br />242 <br />Chair Groff suggested Commissioners attend the February 8 City Council meeting to discuss the <br />243 <br />Scope, Duties and Function of the Commission. <br />244 <br />245 <br />Commissioner Christiansen asked if the February 17 Commission meeting should be rescheduled <br />246 <br />because Chair Groff would not be in attendance and they may not have a quorum. <br />247 <br />248 <br />Ms. Collins stated she would look at the City’s schedule to find out when the space would be <br />249 <br />available. She would check for availability on February 10 so that the Commission would be <br />250 <br />able to distribute the essays for scoring. <br />251 <br />252 <br />Youth Commissioner Cederberg asked if he would be scoring the essays with the Commission. <br />253 <br />254 <br />Chair Groff stated Youth Commissioner Cederberg would be allowed to score the essays this <br />255 <br />year. <br />256 <br />257 <br />Commissioner Slade asked what the timeline was for the Human Rights Award. <br />258 <br />259 <br />Ms. Collins stated it has been on the website but they have not done a push for entries. The new <br />260 <br />Commissioners are expected to start at the April 20 Commission meeting. <br />261 <br />262 <br />Youth Commissioner Cederberg asked if Youth Commissioners would be sworn in at the April <br />263 <br />meeting as well. <br />264 <br />265 <br />Ms. Collins stated she would reach out to the applicants and see if they were still interested.
