Human Rights Commission Minutes
February 24, 2016 Draft Minutes
Page 2of 11

assistance. He pointed out that these comments had not been articulated from the podium or
46
those members of the group working on the project.
47

48
Commissioner Slade stated it would be important for the HRC to have a Commissioner present
49
when there are meetings concerning under-serviced groups including those receiving public
50
assistance. This would allow the Commission to address comments and concerns as they are
51
brought forward.
52

53
Mr. Greffenberg encouraged the Commission to work with the Lake McCarrons Association and
54
the Community Engagement Commission regarding human rights issues.
55

56
Old Business
57

58

a.Report on January 8 City Council Meeting Discussion
59

60
Chair Groff stated his focus had been on having new members appointed to the Human Rights
61
Commission rather than going into detail about the projects they were working on for 2016.
62

63
Commissioner Christiansen expressed concern that the City Council felt they should decrease the
64
number of meetings they have because the HRC is not taking on any new projects for 2016. She
65
pointed out the HRC has had only 4 members for several months and they have been working
66
hard to maintain the programs they have and add new ones when they could.
67

68
Commissioner Carey stated the Commission has been waiting to get direction from the City
69
Council on what projects they would like to see the HRC focus on and with the limited number
70
of members it is difficult to start more projects.
71

72
Commissioner Christiansen stated the meetings are helpful in keeping Commissioners
73
accountable for projects. The Commission does a lot of work off-line to keep projects moving
74
forward. The HRC is a Commissiotimes a year would make it
75
difficult to continue some of the projects.
76

77
Ms. Collins stated the City Council had the opportunity to decrease the number of meetings but
78
had decided to keep it at 12 meetings per year and this has to do with them wanting the HRC to
79
continue the events and programs they have done in the past. When the Commission does more it
80
takes more staff resources and this takes away from the other duties staff may have. City
81
Manager Trudgeon was factoring this in when he made the recommendation the HRC meet 6
82
times per year.
83

84
Commissioner Christiansen stated she had volunteered to help Ms. Collins redacting the essays.
85
The HRC is mindful of staff time.
86

87
88
linked could not review
89
them.
90
