Human Rights Commission Minutes February 24, 2016 Draft Minutes Page 6of 11 Ms. Lohman stated the grant would be using grant money to fund the staff time and contributions 226 of the KOM for this project. 227 228 Commissioner Christiansen asked what the timeframe was for these events. 229 230 Ms. Sanders stated they expect the first event to be March 19 or April 2 if possible. 231 232 Commissioner Christiansen asked if some of the grant money would be used to teach English to 233 the Karin population. 234 235 Ms. Sanders stated this was not one of the goals of the project. This project is about bringing 236 people together to resolve concerns and tensions among neighbors. 237 238 Commissioner Slade asked if childcare would be provided at these events. 239 240 Ms. Lohman stated they would be providing childcare at the events. She stated they would also 241 share any resource information the Commission may have. They would also need help from the 242 Commission on running the conversations and analyzing the final report to organize a workshop 243 with the Karin Organization to address some of the concerns that are identified. 244 245 Ms. Collins stated the Commissioners could communicate with Ms. Lowman individually but 246 not all of them on the same email due to open meeting laws. 247 248 Ms. Lohman stated the KOM is organizing questions for the first meeting to help them feel 249 comfortable expressing their concerns without feeling others think they are complaining. They 250 want to work with the community to open lines of communication. She asked the Human Right 251 Commission to work more on the questions for the second event and to forward any questions or 252 themes they would like to see come up during the first conversation. 253 254 Commissioner Carey asked if there would be a summary available after the first conversation in 255 order to build upon those during the second conversation. 256 257 Ms. Lohman stated she did not believe there would be a detailed summary available prior to the 258 second conversation but she may have a general idea of what was discussed at the first 259 conversation prior to the next event. 260 261 Old Business 262 263 c.Essay Contest Update 264 265 Ms. Collins stated they received 113 essays and this is up from 37 last year. She provided copies 266 of the essays to each of the Commission members including Youth Commissioner Cederberg. 267 She explained the Commissioners could use the rubric provided in a spreadsheet format. 268 269
