Human Rights Commission Minutes <br />April 20, 2016–Draft Minutes <br />Page 3of7 <br />Chair Groff stated only the top three would read their essays due to time constraints with the City <br />91 <br />Council schedule.There would be refreshments prior to the City Council meeting for the winners <br />92 <br />and their families. Once the City Council confirms a date the Commission will be notified. <br />93 <br />94 <br />Commissioner Carey suggested providing twohonorable mention awards at $15 each and <br />95 <br />announcing their names at the ceremony. These winners would not read their essays at the <br />96 <br />Council meeting. <br />97 <br />98 <br />Commissioner Christiansen clarified essay #29 would be first place, second place was essay #85, <br />99 <br />third place was essay #41 and the twohonorable mentions would go to essay #31 and #79. <br />100 <br />101 <br />Ms. Curti stated she would verify the prize amounts for each place. <br />102 <br />103 <br />Commissioner Christiansen moved and Commissioner Slade seconded a motion to assign <br />104 <br />the winners of the essay contest as follows: First place to essay #29, Second place to essay <br />105 <br />#85, Third place to essay #41, and honorable mention to essays #31 and #79 and <br />106 <br />establishing a prize of $15 eachfor honorable mention. <br />107 <br />108 <br />Ms. Curti stated the fivewinning essays would be posted on the website and the City will do a <br />109 <br />press release. <br />110 <br />111 <br />Motion passed unanimously. <br />112 <br />113 <br />Ms. Curti stated essay #29 belonged toIsabella Kennedy, #85 belonged to Elite Thor, #85 <br />114 <br />belonged to Naomi Nickel, #31 belonged to Greta Keffer, and #79 belonged to Tait Haugen. <br />115 <br />Staff will send lettersof congratulation to the students and teachers. <br />116 <br />117 <br />Chair Groff stated having a reception prior to the City Council at City Hall would be more <br />118 <br />convenient. <br />119 <br />120 <br />Commissioner Slade stated the Commission had approved a budget of $250 for the reception. <br />121 <br />122 <br />Chair Groff stated the Commission would need to start considering the essay question for the <br />123 <br />fall. <br />124 <br />125 <br />Commissioner Slade clarified the City would not be participating in the League of Human Rights <br />126 <br />Essay Contest in the future. <br />127 <br />128 <br />Chair Groff stated this was correct. <br />129 <br />130 <br />b.Rose Parade <br />131 <br />132 <br />Ms. Curti stated the Commission’s parade participation had been submitted.
