Human Rights Commission Minutes <br />July 20, 2016 Draft Minutes <br />Page 3of 5 <br /> <br />Chair Groff reviewed the Advisory Commission Code Chapter 201 and Human Rights Code <br />89 <br />Chapter 205. <br />90 <br /> <br />91 <br />Commissioner Carey stated the Commission had previously received information on the <br />92 <br />demographics in the school. She asked when the updated information would be available for the <br />93 <br />Commission. <br />94 <br /> <br />95 <br />Commissioner Slade stated she had previously found this information on the School District <br />96 <br />website. <br />97 <br /> <br />98 <br />Mr. Trudgeon stated staff would contact the schools for this information. <br />99 <br /> <br />100 <br />Chair Groff stated the Commission should consider goals for the next year. There Commission <br />101 <br />has several activities in place currently including the mental health forum in the fall, the essay <br />102 <br />contest and the naturalization ceremony. <br />103 <br /> <br />104 <br />Youth Commissioner Hansel presented a proposal for invisible disabilities including a <br />105 <br />background and potential actions for the Commission such as designating more handicapped <br />106 <br />parking for special events in the City. <br />107 <br /> <br />108 <br />Chair Groff stated this would be something that would fit into the Commissions education scope. <br />109 <br />He suggested Youth Commissioner Hansel work on an article that could be put in the newspaper. <br />110 <br /> <br />111 <br />Commissioner Carey suggested contacting the Library to have an article in their newsletter. <br />112 <br /> <br />113 <br />New Business <br />114 <br /> <br />115 <br /> <br />a.Community Dialogue <br />116 <br /> <br />117 <br />Commissioner Carey stated several individuals and groups have asked if the City or the <br />118 <br />Commission would do something in response to the recent shooting in Falcon Heights and the <br />119 <br />aftermath. Surrounding communities are starting discussions with residents. She recommended <br />120 <br />hosting a panel of individuals willing to discuss their experiences and personal take on the <br />121 <br />situation. There is an opportunity for forums or discussions. <br />122 <br /> <br />123 <br />Commissioner Peterson stated a panel session would be a good start but she would recommend a <br />124 <br />series of discussions. <br />125 <br /> <br />126 <br />Commissioner Slade stated the main channels of communication does not reach everyone. She <br />127 <br />suggested outreach to other organizations such as churches, food shelves, and halfway homes. <br />128 <br />This will engage more of the community. She stated she would be available to assist with <br />129 <br />organizing a dialogue. <br />130 <br /> <br />131 <br />Commissioner Peterson stated Neighborhoods Organizing Change may have some ideas the <br />132 <br />Commission could use. <br />133 <br /> <br />
