Human Rights Commission Minutes
January 18, 2017

Commissioner Slade suggested waiting until after the event of January 19 to see what
participants would like to see.

c.Essay Contest

Ms. Curti stated the Commission would not know how many essays are being submitted until
January 30. She recommended the Commission consider how they would like to proceed with
these once they are received. She prepared a rubric for the Commission to review based on the
previous rubric used.

Commissioner Carey stated they had received a large number of essays last year and based on
what is going on politically and in the area of human rights she would expect that there would be
another large turnout. She suggested that the Commission put together a committee to read all of
the essays and provide the top 30 to the Commission to read a review.

Ms. Curti stated the process would be for the sub-committee to receive all of the essays at the
February meeting, the top 30 essays provided to the entire Commission for review at the March
meeting, and the winners determined at the April meeting for a presentation in May.

Commissioner Eichenlaub stated he would commit to reading all of the essays.

Commissioner Carey suggested having a committee of 3 Commissioners to read all of the essays
and they would determine the top 30 essays for the entire Commission to read and rank.

Youth Commissioners Cederberg and Hansel said they would read the essays.

Commissioner Dailey stated she would be on the committee.

Commissioner Slade stated the rubric looked good. There may not need to be changes until they
start applying it to the essays.

Ms. Curti stated if the committee decides that there should be changes to the rubric for the final
review by the Commission then they can do that at the March meeting. She stated all identifying
information will be removed from the essays.

d.Collaboration with Roseville Area High School

Ms. Curti stated there would be a meeting January 25 to discuss plans for the One World Multi-
Cultural event and the Commission is invited to attend. The event will be April 26. They are
requesting assistance from the Commission with set-up and cleanup. They did ask if the HRC
would have a table at the event.

Commissioner Slade stated she would try to attend.
