Human Rights Commission Minutes
March 29, 2017 – Draft Minutes
Page 3 of7
Ms. Curti stated the community discussion-planning group has met several times. The Consultant
92
had asked people to provide input as to what they would like to see done. There had been
93
questions about sanctuary city and immigration laws, what are the rights of an individual and
94
what are the responsibilities of a City. The group is planning a two-part event over two days.
95
They are working with an immigration attorney, a historian to provide historical information on
96
immigration, and a member of the Faith Community for the first day of events.
97
98
Commissioner Slade stated the faith community member was also a Dreamer.
99
100
Ms. Curti stated they would ask people to come in the second day and consider ideas the City has
101
in response to immigration policies.
102
103
Commissioner Carey asked if the Commission would be able to get the demographic information
104
from the schools.
105
106
Ms. Curti stated this information is available after they school year has started and she would
107
follow up on this.
108
109
d.Discuss Race Film Series
110
111
Ms. Curti stated there had been a good turn out for all three movies. Several people had stated
112
they would like to see more of these types of events. The Library would be interested in
113
cosponsoring these with the Commission and the Commission could also look at cosponsoring
114
with the Shoreview Human Rights Commission again and hosting an event at the new library.
115
She suggested the Commission consider forming a subcommittee to research topics and possible
116
events.
117
118
Commissioner Carey suggested reaching out to the Community Engagement Commission to see
119
if anyone would be interested in working on the subcommittee.
120
121
Commissioner Peterson suggested the Commission table the formation of a subcommittee until
122
the April meeting because they would have more information on the combining of the HRC and
123
CEC. If the combining of the Commissions is expected to be delayed, then they could start a
124
subcommittee in April.
125
126
e.Discuss Mental Health Forum
127
128
Ms. Curti stated this might be something the Commission would like to table until the duties and
129
objectives have been defined for the combined Commission.
130
131
Commissioner Dailey stated the person that had done the Forum in January on Grey Matters is
132
the only person at NAMI that does that presentation and she prefers not to work with the same
133
City within a one-year period. She does offer presentations on anxiety and substance abuse. She
134
recommended scheduling a presentation on anxiety for next January, similar to the Grey Matters
135
event. The Commission could offer other events through NAMI with different speakers.
136
