Commissioner Peterson stated there would be a City Council member at the new
Commission meetings to assist with the transition.

Commissioner Dailey stated the Council stated they would like to see more
communication with the Commission and be made aware of the programs or
proposals they are working on.

Commissioner Peterson stated Youth Commissioners would continue to be a part of
the new Commission. The City Council does have to approve the name that had
been mostly agreed on: Equity and Engagement Commission.

Commissioner Carey stated she is concerned that Human Rights is not included in
the name because the community knows what the Human Rights Commission does
and who they are and that is why there is participation in HRC events.

Chair Groff stated he would not be supportive of the title Equity and Engagement
Commission because equity is too vague. He suggested if Commissioners have an
opinion they should let the City Council know.

Commissioner Peterson stated one of the reasons other subcommittee members did
not want to include the name Human Rights is because the Commission does not
take human rights complaints.

Commissioner Djevi stated that the Commission is working on improving human
rights.

Commissioner Daily stated the other concern that was brought up at the
subcommittee was they felt the use of human rights was an improper use.

Commissioner Carey stated that the Commission does still review complaints so that
they can provide the proper resources and direction. The Commission is proactive in
working with human rights issues. She stated if the new Commission will be charged
with evaluating then the City Council will need to provide direction on what this
means. She expressed concerns that if the Commission needs to have all of their
projects or proposals approved by the City Council then they will not be able to get
as much done because of the time involved in getting City Council approval.

Commissioner Peterson stated that having a Councilmember attending the meeting
will help in driving the direction of the Commission and provide guidance when items
need to be referred to the City Council.

g.Update on Participation in Rose Parade

Ms. Curti stated in previous years the HRC has carried signs promoting human rights
and in recent years had invited other groups to walk with them including members of
the Karen community, essay contest winners, the RAHS human rights group, and a
cheerleading group. The Community Engagement Commission has also participated
in the parade and supported all commissions joining together as one parade unit.
CEC Commissioners Manke and Holub are proposing a parade unit in which all
commissions take part.
