Regular City Council Meeting
Monday,March 12,2018
Page 24
Councilmember Etten expressed appreciation for staff's efforts to ensure compli-
ance with recent legislative action at the State level, while maintaining City con-
trol.
e. Appoint Members to Various City Commissions
Willmus moved, McGehee seconded, appointment of Cat Beltmann and Monica
Bolinger to the Human Rights, Inclusion and Engagement Commission to the two
terms ending March 31, 2021, and appointment of Subayya Subramanian to the
Human Rights, Inclusion and Engagement Commission for the term ending
March 31, 2019.
Council Discussion
Councilmember Willmus noted he was not able to attend the interviews, but he
watched the rebroadcast, and he also reached out to folks not able to attend the
Council meeting. He was impressed with the level of applications received and
commented this is a strong slate of candidates for these Commissions.
Councilmember Etten noted there is a person with the most potential votes apply-
ing for Planning Commission, but that person is also considering running for City
Council. It is worth mentioning because the next leading person is on the slate for
the HRIEC as well, and that may be a potential issue. He is concerned about pos-
sibly replacing someone within six or nine months.
Councilmember Willmus noted he previously considered that, but it does not con-
cern him. Anyone could choose to run for the Council, so it is not a disqualifier.
He did have an opportunity to reach out to the person about the role on the Plan-
ning Commission and he felt good about that conversation. That would not
change his vote for HRIEC.
Councilmember Etten concurred with his feedback.
Councilmember Laliberte noted Bethany Palm's name did not make the tally, but
she did have two votes. The correction was noted.
Mayor Roe noted he was more interested in appointing one of these folks to the
Planning Commission, but subsequent conversations with applicants not able to
attend the Council meeting alleviated his concerns, and he is happy to support the
motion as presented.
Roll Call
Ayes: Willmus, Etten, McGehee, Laliberte, and Roe.
Nays: None.
