Regular City Council Meeting
Monday, October 8, 2018
Page 10
7. Business Items
a. Ramsey County Commissioner, Mary Jo McGuire
Ramsey County Commissioner McGuire provided an updated on County activi-
ties for the City Council.
Councilmember Willmus thanked Commissioner McGuire for coming in and giv-
ing an update. He stated a few weeks ago Chief Mathwig was before the City
Council and talked about a mental health liaison position within Roseville. Also,
the Council had an update by the County Sheriff about some funding, he was able
to bring back to the County Board. He wondered if there was a solution there
with the County to be more proactive on crisis intervention, the mental health
component that communities within the County might be able to better utilize so
each of the communities does not have to fund those positions. He would like to
see the City and County work on this and see where the County Board is at on
some of those things.
Commissioner McGuire stated that was an excellent idea and a great issue area
where the communities and County need to partner on. Mental health issues are
something that involves every aspect of the County work and she was aware of
the additional resources needed. She stated she has talked to the County Public
Health Department as well about partnering with cities, so whatever the County
can do to coordinate with those resources and help provide County staff to help
the cities. She is willing and open to looking at that and how it can work.
Mayor Roe stated that is something the Sheriffs Department and suburban chiefs
have been working on. He thought St. Paul had their own program in place and
the City was talking about a suburban/Ramsey County activity to be more specific
on that. He stated he was just at a meeting of Mayors and City Managers from
several local suburban communities, including New Brighton and Mounds View,
and there is a thought and effort to look at partnerships between the cities and
County.
Councilmember Willmus thought at some point it would be nice to get an update
on the progress of Rice Creek Commons. He understood, regarding organics, that
the City's Public Works, Environmental, Transportation Commission recently met
and is going to be coming forward with some solutions.
Commissioner McGuire stated she can definitely give the Council an updated re-
port on Rice Creek Commons. The County is moving along with the project and
County staff will set up a time with the City to update the Council on details.
Councilmember McGehee asked how it is working out with the garbage burner
the County owns now. The City has heard a lot about recycling and she wondered
how the City as a community can be careful and cognizant of what happens to
those things that the community recycles, or thinks are being recycled.
