Physical Demands & Working Conditions:
Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee
encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The duties listed above are intended
only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific
statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a
logical assignment to the position. The job description does not constitute an employment
agreement between the employer and employee and is subject to change by the employer as the
needs of the employer and requirements of the job change.

The Police Officer is responsible for varied technical, complex, and confidential functions, many of
which are emergency based and require significant attention to detail. Approximately80% of the
time, work is performed at a high level of detail or pressure of deadlines. Most work is performed in
outside the office environment, often in inclement weather and there is limited exposure to one or
more disagreeable elements such as stress that may be intense at times. Work hours vary based on
shift for the 24/7 operation. There is also limited lifting of over sixty pounds occasionally as well as
the need to stand and sit for extended periods of time.Travel within the City will occur much of each
day using a City squad vehicle.

Physical Demands

Type of ActivityFrequency
Walking/Standing: Frequent
During regular police activities, training sessions.
Sitting:Frequent
While driving motor vehicle, sitting at desk.
Standing in One Place:Occasional
Interviewing suspects, traffic control.
Climbing: Occasional
Using stairs rather than waiting for elevators.
Pulling/Pushing: Seldom
Stalled cars or prisoner control.
Crawling/Kneeling/Squatting:Occasional
Firearms training, accident scenes.
Bending/Stooping: Seldom
Gathering evidence.
Twisting/Turning:Frequent
In and out of squad car.
Repetitive Movement:Occasional
Handcuffing and firearms training.
Lifting Waist to Shoulder:Occasional
Lifting gun (up to 10 lbs.).
Lifting Knee to Waist:Seldom
Assist others with lifting body onto gurney (up to 90 lbs.).
R:\\Administration\\H R\\Job Descriptions\\Job Descriptions - Police\\Police Officer 10-19.doc Page 4 of 6
