Northwestern also requires students (and staff) to subscribe to a fairly conservative Christian life-
style. This includes total abstinence of alcohol and drugs. While this does not guarantee that no
Northwestern student will ever drink or get high on drugs, offenders are dealt with directly and
severely, often expelled. The vast majority of Northwestern students are at the College because they
agree with the life-style and want to live a life free of substance abuse and related problems.
Northwestern is not a cult, however. The College's doctrinal position (beliefs) and life-style are
exactly parallel to that of world-famous evangelist Billy Graham who, by the way, was once president
of Northwestern College. Northwestern's doctrine is shared by nearby Bethel College, Wheaton
College of Illinois, and a host of Christian colleges across America. Northwestern is a member of
the Christian College Coalition, a collection of 80 similar colleges nationwide and two in Canada.
Northwestern is fully accredited by the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the North
Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Thus, Northwestern has equal standing academically
with Bethel College, the University of Minnesota and other accredited institutions. Northwestern
is approved by the Minnesota Board of Teaching to offer programs leading to teacher licensure. The
College is a member of the National Association of Schools of Music, the Council of Independent
Colleges, the Association of Minnesota Post -Secondary Educational Institutions, the Minnesota
Higher Education Coordinating Board, and a host of other related organizations of state and national
recognition.
The College has experienced modest student population growth in the past ten years, expressed in
full-time equivalent:
1.
893
914
•.,
..•
Several years ago when Northwestern College was seeking approval for the construction of the fine
arts facility, the prediction was made that long-term growth would take the College to approximately
1,200 full-time equivalent students. While now ten years later a slight upward adjustment of numbers
might be appropriate, the College cannot envision itself growing significantly without destroying. the
woodsy spatial environment the campus now enjoys. This the College is unwilling to do!
The 1990-91 population of the College topped out at 1,052 full-time equivalent day -school students,
with about 65% of those students residing in the dorms. In addition, the College has a modest
evening school adult education program which serves about 100 students.
The College also owns and operates a number of religious radio stations in five midwestern states
and provides, by satellite, religious programming to an additional 75 radio stations nationwide.
A small special events department provides space and food for a number of banquets, retreats,
luncheons, conferences and weddings (as most colleges do); but the income from these activities
makes up a mere 3.6% of total corporate income.
The Plan
In trying to predict what the future of Northwestern College might hold with regard to new buildings,
the following is pertinent. Two buildings are envisioned and approved for the Roseville portion of
the campus: an additional student residence and a physical education center housing an indoor
jogging track, athletic facilities, offices and gymnasium.
2
