Three buildings are ultimately envisioned for the Arden Hills portion of the campus:
The infill of one. of the courtyards of Nazareth Hall, construction of which is unlikely for
a number of years. (See appendix for schematic design drawings.)
The construction of a building to house the growing radio broadcasting
staff and to accommodate the need for better soundproof broadcasting and
recording studios (a facility which is probably more than five years
away). This would be located adjacent to the existing fine arts facility.
The third and most immediate need is for construction of a new Ibrary facility to house
Northwestern's growing collection of books and study materials. (See appendix for
schematic design drawings.)
The cost of the library building is estimated to be $3,723,417. Funds for construction and furnishings
will be entirely raised from donors. Current pledges and gifts for the library total $2,095,722 or 56%
of the amount needed. An aggressive capital campaign is now in progress to raise funds for both
the library in Arden Hills and the physical education facility to be located on the Roseville portion
of the campus.
NVhen the PUD process is complete, it is the desire of the College to obtain a building permit for
the. library as soon as possible, as funding could probably be in hand in the near future.
All three new buildings proposed for the future of the Arden Hills portion of the campus have been
carefully placed so as to have almost negligible visual impact upon the neighborhoods surrounding
the campus.
The courtyard infill of Nazareth Hall is proposed, to remain within the confines of the three walls
which now outline an existing courtyard. While a facade would be added to the fourth (open) side,
it is designed to blend in with the existing building for minimal visual impact.
Both the radio building and the library are to be clustered around the west end and side of the fine
arts building, at a considerable distance from any neighbors. The radio building would likely not
even be seen from outside the campus, as it will be located in the shadow of the fine arts center.
The library will be more visible, but will be compatible with other surrounding buildings and
esthetically appealing.
The location of the radio and library buildings will, however, provide students and staff easy access
to all the academic facilities and the adjacent parking.
None of the proposed buildings should generate additional traffic or parking. While Northwestern
may continue to experience some student growth in the future, neither the radio facilityor the library
are being proposed primarily to solve population problems. It, k true that the movement of the radio
staff and library into new facilities would free up space for much needed classroom space and offices,
but that is only a secondary benefit. Expansion into thoses spaces will relieve current office and
classroom overcrowding.
P
