Regular City Council Meeting
Monday,June 17, 2024
Page 11
Ms. Janae Childer, Shake Shack's General Manager, indicated she was new to the
business and before her arrival, there was not a general manager at the location for
over a year and training was probably not where it needed to be. Since her arrival,
they have implemented all of the required training. Alcohol training is now
provided and on the first day of employment, it is required to be completed, and it
is also mandatory to complete Serve Safe training on the first day of training. The
business is at one hundred percent compliance with existing staff. She is trying to
get everyone where they need to be with standards and compliance.
Mayor Roe asked if Ms. Childer would like to plead a case for a lesser penalty.
Ms. Childer indicated she was not asking for lenience, and thought the shop needed
time to get everything in order, and noted the employees were completely at fault
and were aware of the penalty imposed by the City.
Public Comment
Mayor Roe offered an opportunity for public comment with no one coming
forward.
Etten moved, Schroeder seconded, imposing the penalty outlined in the City Code
of a 60-day suspension of Shake Shack's liquor license for the on-sale violation of
selling alcohol during a suspension period.
Council Discussion
Councilmember Etten appreciated Ms. Childer's honesty and the work done by the
Police Department.
Councilmember Schroeder appreciated Ms. Childer taking responsibility for this
and explaining what will be done going forward.
Mayor Roe noted another business had a suspension of their license and had posted
on social media that they were not able to serve alcohol during their suspension.
He suggested Shake Shack may want to do this in the future.
Roll Call
Ayes: Etten, Groff, Strahan, Schroeder, and Roe.
Nays: None
c. Joint Meeting with Finance Commission
Chair Bester briefly highlighted this item as detailed in the Request for Council
Action and related attachments dated June 17, 2024.
