7

imagine after 20 years the roots are good and I think there's a
good possibility that the tree could be killed.

I also am not that thrilled about a 4 to 1 slope. That's
difficult to maintain. It's about the steepest slope you can get
with residential property.

Also, with the driveway, if you have to come back a ways,
which you will probably in my yard to slope the driveway up,
we're going to possibly come out with a crown effect where from the
edge of the driveway there will be a slope down to the front yard,
so where it's now level with the yard and the driveway now, there will
be a slight slope.I'm fearful of that, and all things considered, I
just feel that I'm not that thrilled about the project.

MRS. JUDY DAWES, 2830 North Oxford: East side of the street.
I'm in favor of this construction. We have an engineer friend
who works with other municipalities in this area. He definitely
states that this improvement will raise the value of our property.
I talked to a real estate friend. He states this will raise the
value of our property by more than the cost of the improvement.
A thing I want to point out to everyone is the interest that we
pay on this improvement is tax deductible. Another thing I want
to point out is driving on the present street in the winter when
there is a fresh snowfall, it's almost impossible to get up on
the north end of the street. After three tries you just back up
and go around to the west and go to Churchill Street and drive
around and come up from Woodhill.

Another thing I want to state is construction costs are down
now because contractors are looking for work, so $14.50 a foot
is a good price.

MRS. JUDY SMOOT, 2854 North Oxford: I oppose this. The
32-foot widening of the street will cause children to be hurt -
which I have a small daughter. Highway 8 as I have noticed,
d~iving, which is out in the country, is not 32 feet. Why should
ours be 32 feet? The natural beauty and everything of the street
would be ruined by the concrete. I have also lived in the City of
St. Paul where they widened the street and when they have
widened (inaudible) narrowed it during the winter. The snow piles
up. Children do not get hurt when there are not curbs. People
don't drive as fast when there are no curbs. I bought my house
three years ago because I loved the natural beauty and now I'm
told there'll be (inaudible) and I lose property. I lose quite a
bit by having that taken out. I am opposed to it, and I did not
sign the original petition.

Several of the houses have been sold in that street in the
meantime so that first petition would have to be done over, and
the second petition with the 29 names, you can make that 30, and
my husband would be 31. We were not able to sign the petition
because we both work, so I'm against it.
