SECTION 38

l1m~
.1Y41

HOISTURE
At tho time of mixing wi t.h the bituminous material, the agl~regate shall not
contain morEl than 3% moisture. If an additive is used as a coating aid, it
must be approved previous to its use by the engineer and in the event that
such additive is used, the aggregate m~y contain moisture up to a maximum
of 6')~.

SECTION 39
~EHPERATURE MID TIfI"lE OF OPERATION
BitwrUnous mat.erial shall not be applied when the air temperature is less
than 500 F. It shall not, be applied when the \veather or roadbed condi hons
are unfavorable in the opinion of the engineer.
]Jitur:1Lnous material sha-! 1 be applied only durinG daylicht hours. Under no
circumstanees 1,o}'il1 it be permissible to apply any bituminous material which
is not mixed at least in a partial manner with the aggregate before dark.

SECTION 40
API"LICA'rJON OF ASPHALTIC MATERIAL
After the windrovred material has been mixed and dried in a manner satJ sfac-
tory to the engineer, the contractor shall apply N. C. 3 cutback asphalt which
has been heated to a temperature of not less than 2000 Fahrenheit. Not more
than 0.5 gallons per square yard of roadway to be covered vTill be permitted
in anyone application. Detween each application of the bituminous material,
the aggregate shall be mixed so as to thoroughly distribute the oil through
the windrmr throu,~h the use of a Seaman mixer. After the LlSt application,
the mixing shall continue until the mixture has become serated, free of
surface moisture, and tacky to a degree satisfactory to the engineer. The
number and rate of applications shall be a' directed by the engineer.

SPHEADING AND ROLLING
Aftcr mixing operations ha_vo been completed, the entire mixture shall be
spread over the roadway to form the designed cross section in as uniform
a manncr as possigle.
The entire street shall be rolled after the material h~\s been spread using
a roller weighinG eiht toms and traveling at the rate of speed which is
slo"\-r enough to assure that the materi&l will not be unduly moved. The
surface shall be rolled until t.here is no further compaction and until- all
ro11er marks are eliminated. Rolling shall be discontinued whenever it.
beLins t.o produce excess crushing or pulverizing of the aggregate or
displacement of the mixturo.
Sufficient Hater to prevent adhesion of t.he mixture to t.he roller will
be permitted but an excess of "\-later must not be used.

SF:CTION hI

/'"-

SECTION 42

GUTTER SECTION
The cont.ractor will be required to stabilize the back slope between the
bottom of t.he gut.ter and the t.op of the boulevard bc~ and then roll and:
tamp this back slope j nto ClacG to form i\ continuous gutter or curb. The
amOlmt of oil per square yard and the depth of the material to be t.reated on
this back slope shall conform with that used for the driving surface of
the street.

(9 )
