-2-

Discussion

Mr. Pope asked what the approximate tenure of a firefighter was at the present time,
He was told that once a man joined the unit he normally stayed until retirement
unless he roved out of the city.

G. Johnson asked if the station would serve the same area regardless of which site
it was placed on. He was told it would.

Mr. Grauel stated that in the past when the authorized strength of the fire department
was raised to 60 firefighters the intent was to provide trained men for the future,
He stated that we must now consider if we should again raise the authorized strength
to provide trained men for the future.

Donna Richter, 400 West County Road B, stated that she couldn't see why we were
considering the station at Minnesota and Western as cars can't make it up the hill
in slippery weather and the corner has poor visibility when exiting from the pro-
posed site.

Everett Peterson, 373 West Sandhurst Drive, stated that the area at the intersection
of Western and B is zoned at the present time for R-l and that if the station was built
it would probably be impossible to develop that land as single family residential. He
felt that this area would then be developed with apartments which would be deterimental
to the adjacent single family dwellings,

G. Htmnicut t, 582 Transit Avenue, was opposed to the site on the O'Neill property as
it would be too near the many schools in the area.

RecoJ1'OOOndat ion

Mr. V. Johnson moved and Mr. G, Johnson seconded, that the Corrunission recorrunend to
the Council that the fire station site be considered from the following list as given
in the descending order of priority:

G - SW corner of Dale and Lovell
D - SW corner of Dale and B-2
A. NW corner of Minnesota and B
B. SE corner of Dale and B

Mr. Pope roved and Mr. Kellett seconded, to amend the original motion to read:

F. D, A, B.

Roll Call on the amendment to motion: Ayes: Kellett, Grauel, Pope. Nays:
V. Johnson and G. Johnson.

Roll Call on the amended motion: Ayes: V. Johnson, Kellett, Grauel, G. Johnson,
Pope. Nays: None.

Planning File 815 - Shafer Contracting Company Request for Special Use Permit at
644, 646 and 656 County Road C

Presentation

Robert Rudie, representing Shafer Contracting, presented profile plans for the pro-
posed excavation of gravel material from the subject lots. He briefly reviewed his
presentation of the last Commission meeting.
