<br />-2- <br /> <br />Discussion <br /> <br />Mr. Dahlgren reviewed the recent revisions of the sign ordinance and stated that this <br />request would require a setback variance, <br /> <br />Recommendation <br /> <br />Mro Go Johnson moved and Mr, Durgin seconded, that the Commission recommend approval of <br />Jerry Showalter's request for variance to sign setback at 2650 North Cleve land 0 Roll <br />Call, Ayes: Cushing, V, Johnson, Go Johnson, Durgin, Kellett, Membrez and GraueL <br />Nays: None 0 <br /> <br />Planning File 855 - Engler Theatres request for variance to sign size at 1201 Larpenteur <br />Avenue <br /> <br />Presentation <br /> <br />Howard Beaver of Ruvelson & Associates represented the Engler Theatreso He indicated that <br />the theatres were requesting a variance in sign size from 100 square feet to 162 square <br />feeto He also stated that the pylon steel that had been used for the Atlantic Store would <br />be used for the new signo Mro Beaver presented a slide presentation which demonstrated the <br />need for a larger sign than allowed by ordinance due to the excessive setback of the <br />building in question. He also indicated that there is sufficient room on the existing <br />steele to allow signs for the two remaining tenants of the Spartan Atlantic Store to be <br />placed at that location, <br /> <br />Discussion <br /> <br />Mro Grauel asked if the Applebaums Store had indicated if they were going to place their <br />sign as shown in the application, <br /> <br />Mr. Dahlgren stated that Sid Applebaum had called him very recently and had indicated that <br />they were proposing to place their sign on the existing steel, <br /> <br />Vern Johnson indicated that should Applebaums not place their sign on the existing pylon, <br />they could put an additional pylon on the property in accordance with our code 0 He asked <br />if there were methods by which this. could be better controlled, Vern Johnson questioned <br />if the steele support was adequate to handle the wind loads that would be imposed upon ita <br />-R~ommendation <br />Mro Membrez moved and Mr, Kellett seconded, that the Commission recommend approval of <br />Engler Theatres request for variance to sign size at 1201 Larpenteur Avenue, and also <br />recommended that the City staff indicate.....,to the owner of the building what was desired <br />by the Planning Commission, <br /> <br />Mr, Go Johnson moved that the motion be amended with the conditions that the structural <br />steele be made adequate to support the additional two signs and that Applebaums be <br />allowed to exceed the sign ordinance by 35 square feet and the third tenant exceed the <br />sign ordinance by 20 square feet as shown on the drawings submitted in the application 0 <br /> <br />The amendment failed for lack of a second, <br /> <br />Roll Call on the original motion: Ayes: Cushing, Durgin, Kellett, Membrez, GraueL <br />Nays: V 0 Johnson, Go Johnsono <br />
