<br />-10- <br /> <br />IaVem Bertram, Hirsch Architects, representing the applicant, reviewed the <br />draina<3e plans, landscaping plans, f1(X)r plans and utility plans for the <br />deve10prrent. He stated there ~uld be 240 student housing units which would <br />house a total of 480 students. He indicated that the building would be fire <br />resistant. <br /> <br />Mr. Gene Cordich, representing Northwestern College, indicated tha they are <br />now renting apartrrents near the Hamline Shopping Center and busing the students <br />to and from the campus. He stated that this proposed dormitory deve10pnent would <br />replace the need to rent the apartments and would, therefore, reduce the aITOunt <br />of traffic going am coming to the campus. <br /> <br />Mr. Bertram indicated that the exit road would be IIDved so that the athe1etic <br />field could be expanded. He indicated that the exit on Lydia would remain the <br />same except that an additional exit would be provided to make a safer turn onto <br />Lydia. <br /> <br />Discussion <br /> <br />Mr. Sirrons asked what the parking lot to the west of the pond would prinarily <br />serve. <br /> <br />Mr. Bertram indicated that it would serve the parent parking when they are <br />visiting the dormitories and to serve the athletic fields. <br /> <br />lDis Steinworth, 3077 Asbury, asked what the closest point of the proposed <br />donni tory building was to the east property line. <br /> <br />Mr. Bertram indicated that it would be 100 feet from the corner of the building <br />to the east property line. <br /> <br />Mr. Vern Albertson, 3103 Asbury, asked h0w nany parking spaces they were planning. <br /> <br />Mr. Bertram indicated there would be 68 spaces provided for student parking at <br />the donnitories and an additional 140 spaces for parent parking for the donnitories <br />and to serve the athletic fields. <br /> <br />Mr. Albertson indicated that having had persons1 involvenent with universities <br />for some 20 years he was concerned that there would not be enough spaces avail- <br />able for the students and questioned how the n1.JItber of vehicles could be con- <br />trolled . <br /> <br />Mrs. Cushing inquired how high the donni tory would be corrpared to the existing <br />houses to the east. <br /> <br />Mr. BertEam indicated that the proposed donnitory would be about the sane height <br />as the existing dorm. Mr. Bertram indicated there would be a snoke detector in <br />each unit and that the building would be constructed of all concrete nasonry. <br />'!he building would not be sprinklered. <br /> <br />Mr. Vern Albertson, 3103 Asbury, indicated that he and his neighbors had a nurrber <br />of concerns about the proposed deve10prrent. <br /> <br />1. '!he requested parking variance. He indicaterl he did not understand how <br />the number of autoIIDbiles could be effectively limited. He indicated the <br />neighbors were concerned that if there was'not enough parking provided, <br />the parking would end up in the streets. <br />
