Planning Commission r~inutes
Wednesday, October 7, 1981
-2-

they were applying for a special use for the buildings at 2825 and 2833 Fairview.
Integrated Microcircuits, which manufactures the computer chips, is presently
in the building at 2825 Fairview. Archibald Development Laboratories is proposing
to lease space at 2833 Fairview and manufacture electronic instruments which would
relate to the medical field, and Buckbee Mears is also proposing to locate at
2833 Fairview and manufacture the same type of devices as the Integrated
Microcircuits Company does.

Di scuss ion

Mr. Mastel asked if electroplating was used in the manufacture of the chips. Mr.
Lund responded there was no electroplating used. Mr. Jeff Schmidt, 1876 County
Road C-2, asked if this company left, could another company come in and use the
same special use permit. He stated he had no objection to this specific use,
but if another use was noisy or gave off odors, etc., he would be opposed. Mr.
Dahlgren commented the Commission could choose to recommend that the special use
be limited to a specific type of activity, and if another firm were to come in,
they would have to adhere to that restriction.

Re commen da t i on

Mr. Rukavina moved, and Mrs. Cushing seconded, that the Commission recommend
approval of the Fairview Development Company's request for special use permit
to produce integrated microcircuit computer chips at 2825 and 2833 Fairview.
Roll call, Ayes: Rukavina, Cushing, Dressler, Mastel, Moeller, and Johnson.
Nays: None.

Mr. Rukavina moved, and Mr. Mastel seconded, that the Commission recommend that
the City Code be amended to include a special use in the B-1 zoning district
which would permit the research, development and manufacture of integrated
microcircuit computer chips. The use should specifically prohibit the use
of any dangerous chemicals. Roll call, Ayes: Rukavina, Cushing, Dressler,
Mastel, Moeller, and Johnson. Nays: None.

Planning File 1344 - American Legion Post Ho. 542 request for variance to
sign ordinance at 700 County Road C.

Presentation

Mr. Dahlgren indicated the American Legion proposes to construct a new sign
in the same location as the existing sign adjacent to County Road C. Because
the existing sign is not set back the required 30', the new sign would require
a variance. Mr. Dahlgren also indicated there is a need for 10' of additional
right-of-way on County Road C. The existing sign is 3 1/2' from the property
line. With the dedication, it would mean the new sign would have to be located
6 1/2' further south than the existing sign, to remain on the Legion property.
