<br />Planning Commission Minutes <br />-9- <br /> <br />Susan Dunkley, a representative of New Horizon, indicated New Horizon has <br />6 day care centers in commercial zones. They are large-scale centers, which <br />are not compatible with an R-l zone. She indicated the centers care for <br />65-70 children per day. <br /> <br />Wiski indicated his concerns regarding a day care center include safety and <br />air quality. He indicated there is a trend toward more day care centers near <br />places of business. The question is whether the facility can be developed to <br />provide a safe, healthy environment. <br /> <br />Dressler moved and Matson seconded that the Planning Commission recommend <br />approval of New Horizon's request for amendment to the Zoning Code to allow <br />day care centers as a special use in the B-2 zone. <br /> <br />The motion was not put to a vote because DeBenedet moved to continue. <br /> <br />Recommendation <br /> <br />DeBenedet moved and Moeller seconded that the Planning Commission continue <br />New Horizon's request for amendment to the Zoning Code to allow the day <br />care use as a special use in the B-2 zone to the July regular meeting of <br />the Commission to allow City staff to gather more information in the following <br />areas: <br /> <br />1) What other cities are doing. <br /> <br />2) Suggested criteria for evaluating a request. <br /> <br />Roll Call, Ayes: DeBenedet, Berry, Moeller, and Wiski. Nays: Dressler and <br />Matson. <br /> <br />Planning File 1502 - Rose Carburetor request for variance to north side yard <br />setback at 1695 Fernwood. <br /> <br />Presentation <br /> <br />Dahlgren indicated that staff rcceivcd a lettcr from the applicant earlicr in the <br />day stating that due to an injury to one of the partners, the applicant could not <br />perform the remodeling work at this time, and so was requesting his requcst be <br />withdra\~. ~1r. Dahlgren suggested the Commission continue the request to allow <br />staff to discuss the withdrawal decision with the applicant. <br /> <br />Recommendation <br /> <br />Matson moved and Dressler seconded that the Planning Commission continue Rose <br />Carburetors request for variance to the July regular meeting of the Commission. <br />Roll Call, Ayes: DeBenedet, Berry, Dressler, Matson, ~1oeller, and Wiski. Nays: <br />None. <br />
