B. Citizen Advisory Commissions & Their Members

Citizen Advisory Commission members are residents and commu-
nity volunteers who help the Council by making recommendations
regarding certain important issues.

1. Commissions Also Act as a Group
If you are a citizen advisory commission member, you must work
with your fellow commission members on the issues the City Council
as a body has assigned to your commission. The Council assigns is-
sues to citizen advisory commissions either through the City Code
(see Title 2, Commissions) or by separate Council motion.

As an individual commission member you should not ask staff to
work on a favorite personal issue of yours; you need first to persuade
a majority of your Commission or of the City Council that your idea
has merit and should be pursued.

2. Commissions Are a Link to the Community
Citizen advisory commissions are an important link between the City
Council and City Residents. Individual commission members can be
the eyes and ears of the Councit helping Councilmembers under-
stand the perspective of City residents on City issues.

3. Commission Members May Have Special Expertise in a Subject
In addition, certain commission members may have special training
or experience regarding some aspect of City operations. Their service
on a commission, therefore, brings informed insight to bear on the
important issues facing the City.

8
