PLANNING FILE 3801
Request by Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 2131 Fairview Avenue, in cooperation with the
VARIANCE to Roseville City Code,§1009 (Sign Regulations)
City of Roseville, for a to
allow an additional freestanding sign on the premises.
Chair Bakeman opened the Public Hearing for Planning File 3801.
City Planner Thomas Paschke reviewed the request by Corpus Christi Catholic Church to
allow a second freestanding ground sign on the premises – to be installed adjacent to the
Fairview Avenue access.
Mr. Paschke noted that, since the summer of 2006, the City Planner and Corpus Christi have
been discussing the church’s interests in a second freestanding sign on the premises; with
the City Planner suggesting that the church hold off on a variance request because of the
anticipated revisions to City Code, §1009 (Sign Regulations), with the major revisions to be
reviewed and supported by the Planning Commission in May of 2006. Mr. Paschke advised
that, due to a number of factors, the sign ordinance modifications have not proceeded to the
City Council for their adoption; Council action is now anticipated action in early 2007.
Staff recommended approval of the requested Variance, based on comments and findings
outlined in Section 5, and the conditions of Section 6 of the project report dated December 6,
2006.
The only discussion was to verify that the proposed sign would be located two feet (2’) off the
ground, similar to the existing signage.
Applicant Representative, Ken Crea, 1796 Skillman Lane
There were six (6) representatives from the church in attendance; however, Mr. Crea spoke
on behalf of Corpus Christi, as a member of the Church Sign Committee. Mr. Crea advised
that the existing sign was not visible from Fairview Avenue, and the proposed sign would
match the color scheme and style of the existing sign.
Commissioner Doherty complemented the church on the attractiveness of their existing
signage; and questioned the rationale for using Cedar posts, rather than brick as on the
current sign.
Mr. Crea advised that the Cedar posts had been recommended by their sign contractor as a
long-lasting and lower cost option.
