ROSEVILLE HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION

PROPOSED AGENDA FOR 1986-87

Brenda Thomas

It is my goal to raise the profile of the Commission in the
community; not only to ensure that Roseville residents are aware
of our existence and our purpose, but to maintain a vital and
serious spirit within our Commission. It is my expectation that
this will be a working commission, concerned with three major
areas of activity:

3.

Understanding and carrying out the human rights mandate
as it is defined by the state of Minnesota

Ongoing analysis and policy development pertaining to
timely issues, for example the AIDS issue, the peace
movement, providing sanctuary for foreign political
dissidents

Public Relations. Our public relations are not limited
only to education, outreach and promoting the Commission,
but include our projected "image" or personae. Collec-
tively we serve as a "conscience" for the community
regardless of the political winds.

1.

2 .

Specific Recommendations for Further Development

1. The ROSEVILLE REVIEW is the official newspaper for the city.
The Commission can create a "column":

- News and information from the Commission
- Examples of No Fault Grievances

NEED: Coordinator to review actual grievances from our files
and the Department of Human Rights, to select examples to be
used in the column. Coordinator would also serve as editor
of the "column.

Likewise, a column could be created for the newsletter which
is i~sued periodically by the city of Roseville and mailed to
residents. Probably the same editor, or team editors.

2. Outreach and interface with schools, churches, and civic and
business organizations. The Bloomington Commission provides
a good model for this kind of outreach.

NEED: Speakers and speechwriters
Printed literature
Visual aids

3. Delegate to the League of Minnesota Human Rights Commissions
4. Liaison with-the Department of Human Rights

5.

An organized plan
rights occasions:
H~man Rights Day.

for observing important human and civil
Martin Luther King Day; International
O-ec. lJ-" Hv
