Essay Contest <br />Mike Trainor announced that the information on the essay contest had not yet <br />gone out to the schools. It was agreed that the deadline for essay submission <br />should be extended to December 15, and that Staff would send out letters by the <br />end of the week to the same schools contacted last year. Michael Hermes <br />agreed to contact local newspapers with a new press release announcing the <br />deadline extension. <br /> <br />Commission set a goal of January 22, 1995 council meeting for essay awards <br />presentation. Jill Bergquist offered to write down essay contest procedures for <br />posterity. <br /> <br />VII. Grievance Update <br />No report. Marcy Cordes agreed to check with Sally Chial on whether anyone <br />has contacted the City regarding this issue. <br /> <br />VIII. Other Business <br />A. Mike Trainor announced the appointment of two new Human Rights <br />Commissioners, Isaac Afwerke and Christine Malark. There was <br />extensive discussion about concerns the Commission has with <br />appropriateness of some of the questions asked by the Council during the <br />interview process. Mike Trainor offered to bring the Commission's <br />concerns to the Council, if the Commission wants to put some <br />suggestions together regarding interview practices. The Commission <br />acknowledged that many excellent questions were asked during the hiring <br />process, and that this should also be mentioned in any report made to the <br />council. <br /> <br />B. New member orientation - Mike Trainor agreed to meet with new <br />commissioners for 20 minutes prior to the December 12, 1995 meeting. <br />Marcy Cordes will make sure the new members will be notified of this <br />arrangement. <br /> <br />IX. Continuation of 1995 Goal Setting Session <br /> <br />The Commission reaffirmed its list of GIVENS, and decided to add youth <br />commissioner to the list: <br />A. Human rights Commission Essay Contest <br />B. Grievance Mediation Training <br />C. Cable <br />D. Bias Response - Police <br />E. Youth Commissioner - The commission discussed ways to more <br />
