<br />~~ <br /> <br />HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION MINUTES <br /> <br />TUESDAY, JULY 9,2002 <br /> <br />Call to Order <br /> <br />Acting Chair Thelma McKenzie called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. <br /> <br />Roll Call <br /> <br />Present: Mark Chapin, Philip Crump, Martha Hardesty, Thelma McKenzie, Stephen <br />Smith, Rita Stanoch, Larry Voeller, Howard Wagner, Staff Liaison Carolyn Curti <br /> <br />Excused Absence: Todd Anderson, Hannah Neprash <br /> <br />Absent: Stephen Zorn <br /> <br />Approve Minutes <br /> <br />Larry Voeller moved approval of the May and June 2002 minutes and Howard Wagner <br />seconded the motion. Motion passed. <br /> <br />Select a Chair <br /> <br />Acting Chair of the Commission Thelma McKenzie asked for nominations for Chair of <br />the Commission. Mark Chapin nominated Thelma McKenzie and Howard Wagner <br />seconded the motion. No other nominations were made. The motion passed to elect <br />Thelma Chair of the Human Rights Commission. <br /> <br />Rose Parade <br /> <br />Howard Wagner reported that he and one of the essay winners were prepared to march in <br />the Rose Parade. The Parade was cancelled shortly after it started because ofrain. The <br />candy that was to be given out at the parade was given to the Parks and Recreation <br />Department to distribute. <br /> <br />Essav Contest and Ouestion <br /> <br />Commission members discussed the Essay Contest that the Commission sponsors each <br />year. Members are concerned that the number of students who participate is low. <br />Members discussed whether we could do more outreach, working with the media and the <br />Human Rights network? Are there ways to reach 6th, ih and 8th graders who are home <br />
