<br />~ SBVfbbE <br /> <br />Human Rights Commission <br />Meeting Minutes, August 12, 2003 <br /> <br />Present: Chair Thelma McKenzie, Mark Chapin, Phillip Crump, Jacqueline LeMay, Steve Smith, <br />Karen Vnuk, Howard Wagner, Steve Z0111 <br />Absent: Martha Hardesty, LaITY Voeller, <br />Staff: Carolyn Curti <br /> <br />Others: Three members of the community <br /> <br />Chair Thelma McKenzie called the meeting to order at 7:08 p.m. <br /> <br />Approve Minutes <br /> <br />Thelma McKenzie recommended that the word "instead" be removed from minutes relating to the <br />section on Intake. Steve Zom moved to accept the minutes of June 10, 2003 as corrected. Howard <br />Vvagner seconded the motion. Minutes were approved. <br /> <br />Mark Chapin introduced Mr. Ibrahim Kozak, a Visiting Professor at the University of Minnesota who <br />is from Turkey. Professor Kozak is conducting research on Democratic Values in Islamic Society <br /> <br />Goal Setting <br /> <br />Speakers Bureau Larry Voeller could not attend the meeting but he sent a draft letter that invites <br />individuals and groups to be on the Speakers Bureau. Commissioners reviewed the letter and <br />recommended that it be expanded to include businesses and churches. Carolyn Curti will redraft and <br />prepare the letter for distribution. Commissioners will review the list at <br />httj)://www.humanrigl.ts.state.nlJ].us/resourccs rcsguidc.htI1}l and identify groups or individuals who <br />the Commission should invite to join the Speakers Bureau. <br /> <br />Meet with Superintendent Phil Crump will contact the Superintendent's office to arrange a <br />meeting. <br /> <br />Welcome Packet for New Teachers Commission members praised Howard Wagner for his <br />outstanding work to put together the welcome packet for new teachers to the Roseville Area Schools. <br />Carolyn Curti will edit the packet for grammar, and she will add information to the section specific to <br />the Human Rights Commission. Commissioners asked that staff contact each school to get the names <br />of new teachers. Carolyn Curti will assemble packets so that they can be mailed to new teachers the <br />first week of school. <br /> <br />Grant Applications No report. <br /> <br />Hire Performer for Martin Luther King Speech Karen Vnuk said she needed clarification for <br />when the Commission wants the performer. Commissioners are interested in either January to <br />commemorate MLK's birthday or sometime in February in honor of Black History Month. Vnuk will <br />
