<br /> <br />Human Rights Commission <br />Meeting Minutes, October 14, 2003 <br /> <br />Present: Thelma McKenzie, Chair, Phillip Crump, Jacqueline LeMay, Karen Vnuk, Larry Voeller, <br />Howard Wagner, Steve Zorn <br />Absent: Mark Chapin, Steve Smith <br />Staff: Carolyn Curti <br /> <br />Larry Voeller called the meeting to order at 7: 1 0 p.m. in the Fireside Room at the Roseville Skating <br />Center. <br /> <br />Approve Minutes <br /> <br />Karen Vnuk moved approval of the minutes and Howard Wagner seconded. The minutes were <br />approved unanimously. <br /> <br />Select Human Rights Commission Chair and Vice-Chair <br /> <br />Commissioners discussed the responsibilities of the Chair and Vice-Chair. The Commission has not <br />selected a Vice-Chair in the recent past. Commissioners discussed interest in the two positions. Larry <br />Voeller nominated Thelma McKenzie for the Chair position. Steve Zorn expressed interest in serving <br />as Vice-Chair; however, since two commissioners were not at the meeting, he wanted to hear whether <br />they were interested. <br /> <br />Thelma McKenzie alTived and took over Chair responsibilities for the meeting. <br /> <br />Commissioners decided to wait until the November meeting to vote on the Chair and Viee-Chair <br />positions, <br /> <br />Speakers Bureau Letters to Businesses <br /> <br />The letter to invite individuals and groups involved with human rights to join a speakers bureau is <br />ready, Phillip Crump agreed to review the list of organizations on the Mimlesota Department of <br />Human Rights webpage and identify who to invite to partieipate in the Speakers Bureau. In addition to <br />this, Commissioners are encouraged to send nanles to Carolyn Curti before the end of October. <br /> <br />Superintendent Meeting <br /> <br />In mid-September Phil Crump, Thelma McKenzie and Mark Chapin met with Dr. John Thein, <br />Superintendent of Roseville Area Schools (RAS), to discuss human rights issues in the school district. <br />Thein presented demographic information and talked about the shift in the ethnic make up of students <br />in the schools, They discussed what impaet this may have on the school distriet budget including <br />hiring teachers or translators who speak other language. He is also interested in conflict resolution. <br />
