Specie i ci ~
~md~y, A~~~~t 6, a7
P~~e ~~
Councilmember Pust questioned if pedestrian access for the adjacent
Coventry Apartments would be provided.
Mr. Paschke advised that the adjacent office building/property owner
was interested in keeping pedestrian access open to allow shared
crossing similar to the existing status. Mr. Paschke advised that staff
would advocate pedestrian access, but not vehicular access, to avoid
potential safety issues and problems with cross-through traffic.
Councilmember Pust encouraged the applicant to design the site in
such a way to allow pedestrian access so people don't need to get in
their vehicle to get there.
Ms. Sundry assured Councilmembers that the applicant was a
neighborhood-type market and it would be in the retailer's best inter-
est to make it a part of community and include connectivity advan-
tages as a component of their site plan; and noted that the applicant
would work with staff to accommodate that connectivity.
Councilmember Pust expressed her appreciation to the applicant; and
noted that residents of the Coventry Apartments in particular had lim-
ited access to vehicles and public transit, and the addition of the spe-
cialty grocer may be a great help to that neighborhood.
Councilmember Ihlan spoke in opposition to the motion on policy
grounds; expressing concern with increased traffic on the narrow
frontage road; and the City Council's obligation to look at traffic im-
pacts. Councilmember Ihlan opined her support of redeveloping va-
cant space rather than spot rezoning on an ad hoc basis to allow previ-
ously non-conforming uses; and further opined that an existing local
business, Byerly's Grocery Store, was located across the street allow-
ing for neighborhood access.
Roll Call
Ayes: Pust; Kough; Roe; and Klausing.
Nays: Ihlan.
Motion carried.
