Mr. Darrow ad- vised that, if the City Council held the committee to 15 members as indicated, there remained 7 vacant positions. Discussion ensued on how to make appointments, with Councilmem- ber Roe suggesting positive suggestions rather than negative elimina- tions. Councilmember Ihlan noted that one applicant was anon-resident, and spoke in support of eliminating that applicant accordingly; suggesting that in an effort to have business representation, aseparate business be created, but not part of the steering committee. Councilmember Ihlan noted that those applying represented a good cross-section in the community, and opined that the remaining residents be appointed to serve, without any eliminations. Mayor Klausing expressed concern with committees getting too large to be effective or efficient; and spoke in support of Councilmember Roe's suggestion for individual Councilmember appointment of one applicant. Councilmember Ihlan spoke in support of appointing all applicants; opining that it was divisive and created controversy to eliminate ap- plicants. Mr. Darrow noted that there would be other opportunities, outside the steering committee configuration, to allow member s of the public to be involved. Councilmember Pust opined that every time the City Council opened the application process, there were more applying than the number of vacancies; and further opined that there should be no hurt feelings, as other opportunities would be available in the future. Klausing moved, Roe seconded, that individual Councilmembers, in voting order, submit one name for appointment to the citizen-at-large members of the steering committee.
