Regular City Council Meeting
Monday, May 12, 2008
Page 13
Mayor Klausing expressed his appreciation to the Commission for their work, recog-
nizing the difficult issues they deliberated and their contact with the public on many
passionate issues, and their listening to those public comments, while applying appli-
cable law and ordinance. Mayor Klausing opined that the deliberative nature of the
Planning Commission would be useful for the City Council to emulate, and offered
his personal kudos to commissioners.
Councilmember Roe, as a follow up from last year's discussions, questioned if the
Commission observed repetitive issues coming before the Variance Board that may
indicate the need for specific zoning code adjustments by the City Council.
Commissioner and Variance Board Chair Boerigter, from the Variance Board's
standpoint, didn't see any obvious or repetitive issues needing more refinement.
Commissioner Boerigter noted an observation of Chair Bakeman for further review of
suggested building heights; however, didn't see any issues from the perspective of the
Variance Board.
Mr. Trudgeon advised that staff had just begun tracking data to determine any trends
in various requests, and as more data was available, staff would report back to the
Variance Board on specific issues.
Councilmember Pust commended the Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee for
their authentic incorporation of the Imagine Roseville 2025 in the Comprehensive
Plan Update process, opining that this was much appreciated by Roseville citizens, as
well as the City Council.
Councilmember Pust sought commissioner comment and opinion on whether City
Council liaisons would be helpful or detrimental to the work of advisory commis-
sions, and specifically the Planning Commission from their perspective.
Commissioner Doherty opined that he didn't see the need for a liaison unless com-
missioners became consistently at odds with the City Council in their recommenda-
tions to the body, noting the additional meeting time this would require of Council-
members. Commissioner Doherty suggested that Councilmembers watch the meet-
ings, and contact Chair Bakeman if they saw any problems.
Commissioner Wozniak advised of his previous concerns and the relationship with
Planning Commission actions, and subsequent action of the City Council; however,
he noted that staff had prepared an outline of the status of each file coming before the
Planning Commission, and its status of permits, and City Council action, which had
been extremely beneficial.
Chair Bakeman noted that the City Council, in the past, had liaisons to various com-
missions, but questioned if it was beneficial in allowing for more productive and in-
dependent discussions.
