Attachment A
Meghan Brady
8th Grade - Parkiew
Mr. Ebert
First Piace
T'hink Before You Buy
When I saw trendy clathes or a pair of shoes at the store, I never thought. about
how they were mad or how they got there. That was before. Now I kow that many
famous designrs ard stares use sweatshops for the manfactre of their products.
Sweatshops are piaces where people wark in horrible conditiors and get paid next to
nothing. I think that it is a violation of human rights to have paor, innocent people
making things far us and earning barely enough to get by. Tnese people don't earr
enough money for food, housing and clothes for their farnilies, Iet alone money ta send
their children to callege. They are just trying to manage and they have to endure awfuI
conditians and treatment. i think that it is wrong for people to have to work in that kind
of harmful environment.
Article 24 of the Universal Dectaration of Hurnan Riglzts states: "Everyone has
the right to rest and leisure, ineluding reasonable l'unitation of worrcing hours and periodic
hoidays with pay." Cauntless people get sick or die each year due to fatigue caused by
overwork ir sweatshops in rrany cauntries, including China, Indonesia, India, and
Mexico. Sorne peope work 12 or more hours per day for seven days a week. People work
so hard and for so Iang and most get paid less than $1 AO an hour. That can'i be right, can
it? It is not right for ihese people to e working so ard in such terrible conditions.
Many people who work in sweatshops have tried to forrn labor uniors. Thei
attempts have failed because of uruon busters, who are usualy ocal thugs and criminals
hired by the cornpanies. Article 23, Section 4 of tie Universal DecIaration af Hurnan
Rights states: "Everyone has the right to fonm and to join trade unians for ihe protection
