Tlese laws say nothing about poultry or dometicated animaIs ihat may be kept in the
city, but even poultry and dornesticated animals or pets must adhere to the other
requireinents shawn in yeliow. This is because te City Council wished to protect the
residents frarn water and health problezzs with disease and manur runoff iilto the Iakes
and streaas, rauseous farm and animal odors, dust, farm chemicals, loud naise from the
animals and machinery, and animals heing hit by cars on the roads. Nor did they wish to
have farm arimals sold and butchered in the City.
In Roseville, residents respect iheir neighbars, their quality o life, and thezr aealth. They
do nat raise farm ani-nals and very rarely fowl or chickens in the City. They do not
purposefully store farrri feeds, manure, and farrr chemicals. Generally, residents do not
house animals that irritate neighbars because of their smelI or noise.
However, some residents have exotic pets such as Southeast Asian Pot Bellied Pi;s,
rabbits and mice, snakes (like pythons}, fish, and bircs. No peznaits are recuzred by City
Cade. Sa, Eileen, if you wish to have an exotic ird or poultry, do your research. Call it a
special pet, explai your special pt pans to your neighbars, build the protective coop to
keep the pet safe from dogs and cats, raccoons and skunks, determine how you will
obtain and store the food and get rid of the manure, research how to keep the pet caln,
cool in summer and warm in winter, and quiet, visit your animal doctar for help with
food and medicine, and check the Universiiy of Minnesota Extension Service Brlletins
and othez University web sites. There are so many varieties of chicken, inclucing Chinese
chickens that adjust to teing a pet. Ynu rnay alsa want ta go to the State Fair and talk
with the young farmers raising birds in the 4-H programs.
Bst Wishes o your hobby and respeci your neighbors and the enviranment.
Sincerely,
CITY OF ROSEVILLE
