� £} � <br />� f;v . <br />:�w , <br />'.,.:- ���'r�} * <br />Date: OS/08/06 <br />Item: S.b <br />Proclamation Declaring May <br />2006 as Asian Pacific Heritage <br />Month <br />Asian Pacific American Heritage Month <br />May 2006 <br />Whereas: In 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed a Joint Resolution designating the first <br />week of May as Asian Pacific Heritage Week, and in 1992 the holiday was expanded to the <br />entire month of May; and <br />Whereas: The month of May commemorates the first Japanese immigrants to the United <br />States on May 7, 18�3, and the transcontinentalrailroad completion on May 10, 1869 (Golden <br />Spike Day); and <br />Whereas: Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is celebrated with community festivals, <br />activities and educational opportunities; and <br />Whereas: Asian Pacific Americans have a long history of contributions to the arts, sciences <br />and humanities; and <br />Whereas: Asian Pacific Americans bring a rich cultural heritage representing many <br />languages, ethnicities and religious traditions to our society; and <br />Whereas: Approximately five percent of Roseville residents are of Asian Pacific American <br />descent; and <br />Whereas: Diversity represents one of our greatest strengths, and we must strive to ensure <br />that all Americans have the opporlunity to reach their full potential. By recognizing the <br />accomplishments and contributions of Asian Pacif'ic Americans, Roseville celebrates the <br />importance of inclusion in building a brighter future for all our citizens. <br />Now, Therefore Be It Resolved, that the City Council hereby declare May 2006 to be Asian <br />Pacif'ic American Heritage Month in the City of Roseville, County of Ramsey, State of <br />Minnesota, U.S.A <br />In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the City of Roseville <br />to be affixed this 8th day of May 2006. <br />Mayor Craig D.
