Harold when others teased. Some people didn't go along with the bullies, which was
— good, but Harold would have benefited more if someone had tried to put a stop to the
teasing.
There were other victims of hateful words. Daniel* was a victim from many other
years, his bulk and peculiar smell attractingunwanted attention. Jack* and Tom* were
also outcasts. Harold fit in only with these kids.
The "Universal Declaration of Human Rights" mal{es some very important points.
In Articiel it states "All human beings... should act towards one another in a spirit of
brotherhood. "My classmates and i failed to do this. No one treated Harold lil{e a brother;
we treated lnm more like an enezy.
Article 2 declares that "Everyone is entitledto all the rights and freedoms set forth
in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind". Harold was set apart by his peers,
who went against the Declaration. We filed him into the "unpopular", "slow", and
"dimwitted" categories. These are unpleasant distinctions that we gave Harold.
The students also defied Article 5, which says "No one shall be subjected to...
degrading treatment...". If having your peers go around saying you have a'Rare Butt
Disease' isn't degrading, I don't know what is.
"Education shall be directed to the full development of the human personality and
to the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. It shall
promote understanding, tolerance and fnendship,,," (Article 26, #2) When one child is
singled out to be teased because of how he looks, it does not promote understanding,
tolerance, and friendship, nor does it show respect for lus human rights and fundamental
freedom.
If only someone had tal{en charge, and stood up for these victitns of
discrimination. I didn't go out of my way to be mean to Harold and the others, hut I
didn't go out of my way to be nice, either. Below are some steps that I could have taken
to prevent some suffering, steps I will take in the future in a similar situation.
1. Don't make fun of the person being teased.
2. When others mal{e fun, don't laugh or go along.
3. Step in and say that what is happening is not nice. No one deserves to be cut
down.
4. Talk to the victim and be kind. Ask where they would go if they won a trip to
anywhere in the world, what their favorite thing to do is, etc.
I know that many, many people are victims of teasing every day. Wimesses of
teasing are the people who can take action. Intervene and stick up for the victim, because
if you don't, the ineory will haunt you afterward.
*The names have been chan ed.
