Roseville Human Rights Commission <br />Meeting Minutes -September 08, 2009 <br />Page 4 of 5 <br />1 Ms. Curti advised that she could draft the application and e-mail it to members for their review <br />2 prior to submission. <br />3 <br />4 Commissioners expressed support in a third annual forum. Member Yates provided suggestions <br />5 for future forums (i.e., Neighborhood House) in furthering and engaging other cultural <br />6 opportunities to address the changing face of Roseville and impacts to the community. Member <br />7 Yates said in her experience people were genuinely interested in receiving information on other <br />8 cultures; and suggested that seeking additional cooperative and partnering opportunities with <br />9 such groups may be the next natural step for the HRC. <br />10 <br />11 Discussion included the HRC's goal in getting further into neighborhoods to determine their <br />12 various representations; how to build on partnerships and develop cultural information to create <br />13 better understanding between cultures. <br />14 <br />15 Member Kennedy spoke in support of the reputation and quality of Neighborhood House <br />16 programming that could provide content to the context, as well as information resources. <br />17 <br />18 Chair Singleton suggested that the Forum Planning Subcommittee consider this information and <br />19 provide a recommendation to the full HRC. <br />20 <br />21 Member Grefenberg expressed his concern in addressing not only cultural, but lifestyle diversity, <br />22 in the community; and questioned if the cultural complementary model should be the focus for <br />23 future forums; further questioning whether all cultures needed to be accommodated. <br />24 <br />25 Discussion continued regarding cultural and lifestyle diversity. <br />26 <br />27 Member Jaeger opined that it was more productive to be proactive rather than reactive in any of <br />28 ~ these issues, with the goal focusing on civic engagement. <br />29 <br />30 Member Jaeger moved, seconded by Member Kennedy, approving submission of Minnesota <br />31 Department of Human Rights Project grant, funds proposed for use in developing capacity <br />32 building or implementing civic engagement in Roseville; with the final project to be further <br />33 detailed and developed by the HRC upon award of funding. <br />34 <br />35 Motion carried: all Ayes: 7/0. <br />36 <br />37 VI. Other <br />38 Member Grefenberg addressed recent alleged discrimination activities in the Anoka-Hennepin <br />39 School District among certain teaching staff; and sought input from individual HRC members <br />40 related to local school district provisions. <br />41 <br />42 Member Kennedy, in her role with Roseville Area Schools; and Member Yates, in her role with <br />43 the MN Department of Education, noted the extensive and ongoing equity training and guidance <br />44 in decision-making for all programming and staffing. It was further noted that the School Board <br />45 fully supported this equity training and actions; and the District's excellent leadership in <br />
