City Council Study Session — 04/19/04
DRAFT Minutes - Page 25
side; and presented recommendations of the Parks and
Recreation Commission for naming the north area "Applewood
Park" and the south area as "Applewood Overlook." Mr. Brokke
further reviewed the process in coming to this recommendation,
including 1) a review of City policy for naming parks; 2)
solicitation of neighborhood suggestions; 3) discussion of the
property's history; and 4) discussion of name options.
Discussion included other name options considered; community
response and comment; and future planned aesthetics at the pond
overlook area.
Mayor Klausing noted that, since this is a study session, action
on naming the park would be considered at a future business
meeting.
No formal action was taken.
13. Hear a Report about the Deer Population in Roseville
Parks and Recreation Director Lonnie Brokke reviewed his
department's assessment over the last year regarding residential
concerns about an increasing deer population within the City.
Mr. Brokke advised that the City had taken advantage of an
opportunity in February of 2004 to participate in an aerial flyover
for a deer population count. Mr. Brokke noted that findings were
that there didn't appear to be a high deer population in the
community; noting that while the flyover was not scientific in
nature, a total count of 36 deer were reported during the flyover.
Mr. Brokke briefly reviewed the concentrated locations of the
deer sightings.
Mr. Brokke noted that, while his office had not received a great
number of calls, residents appeared to be most concerned about
damage to their gardens; and safety concerns, with a report four
accidents due to deer activity over the last year in the
community. Mr. Brokke advised that his staff would continue to
work with Ramsey County and monitor the deer population, but
was not recommending any action at this time due to the lower
than expected deer population.
Discussion included migration and habitat areas.
Hear a Report
about the Deer
Population in
Roseville
