B. Citv Manager Recommendation # 13 : To Eliminate one Full Time employee in the Nature Center
Imact Statements: The elimination of the full time Naturalist position will:
Result in a complete change in Center focus from environmental enrichment to a basic, self guided
interpretive center or other community use.
o An education center becomes a visitor center.
o Lost daily supervision and immediate direction far the Center.
o Lost program credibility— programs need the guidance and expertise of a lead naturalist.
o Loss of much of the anticipated revenues
. Eliminate the long standing arrangement with the Roseville Area Schools to provide hands-on
environmental learning experiences.
o Lost revenues
o No opportunity to showcase and develop new programs, classes and partnerships
o Environmental education would be minimized
• Reduction in significant volunteer opportunities.
o Display/exhibit constructionwill be hampered
o Special events will be minimized
o Volunteer contact i.e., recruitment, training, orientation, supervision would be minimized.
• Loss of the Nature Center will result in the elimination of recreation opportunities for a segment of
population that chooses to be involved with the out of doors rather than athletics or the arts.
• Loss of positive opportunities for our youngsters, oldsters and families to get involved in. The
alternatives are many times not good.
. Unfulfilled community responsibilityfor teaching stewardship of our natural resources.
o Public information and community service will be reduced.
Recent developments on Dale Street south of County Road C have given the City a potential future
opportunity that would be difficult to match anywhere in the Twin Cities metro area. The close proximity
of the Muriel Sahlin Arboretum, the Harriet Alexander Nature Center and the Wild Life Rehabilitation
Center blend nicely into an "Environmental Complex". The potential for partnerships and collaborative
efforts to promote environmental programming, enhance community opportunities, provide hometown
expertise are an invaluable neighborhoodresource. The loss of the Nature Center and a full time
naturalistwould jeopardize the "EnvironmentalComplex" concept.
