Van Dyke Street
Maplewood, MN 55109-3796
March 9, 2000
Mr. John Loftus
Fire Marshall
City of Roseville
2660 Civic Center Drive
Roseville, MN 55113
Re: Bum Permits - Prairie Management
Dear Mr. Loftus:
Tel: 651-748-2500
Fax: 651-748-2508
www.co.ramsey.mn.us
The Ramsey County Parks and Recreation Department requests permits to conduct
controlled burns this spring at three sites in Roseville. The purpose of the burns is to
improve the quality of the prairie vegetation. Periodic burns stimulate prairie grasses
and flowers and eliminate non-prairie vegetation.
The first site is the natural area around the ponds at Lake McCarrons County Park.
The second site is on the north side of County Road C-2 east of Lexington in Lake
Josephine County Park. The Ramsey County Parks and Recreation Department
personnel will conduct the burns. The Department has extensive experience
conducting controlled burns over the past 16 years. The Department will provide
adequate personnel and equipment to direct the fire in a controlled manner. All
burning is done against the wind so that it moves at a slow speed. The sites will be
burned on days with winds, which blows smoke away from streets and homes.
The third site is an area within the city of Roseville's new Reservoir Woods Park.
Ramsey County will provide assistance to the city to begin management of the prairie
at this park. This site is surrounded by a trail, which provides an excellent firebreak.
Ramsey County will provide all necessary equipment and key personnel. Additional
City staff will assist. I will be there and assure that proper instructions are given and
that safe procedures are followed. This site will not be burned with a westerly wind,
which would blow smoke toward the closest homes east of the park.
In order to get the proper weather and wind conditions, I ask that the permits be valid
for a period from March 28th to May 1 Oth. Please call me at (651) 748-2500, Ext. 330,
if you need any further information, or if you want me to attend any meetings.
Thank you for your assistance.
Sincerely,
'iQlz- -

Larry E.
