MEMO
To: c col
FRONL SteveSarkoxy='
DATE: May 12, 2000
RE: County Road C Pedestrian Crossing
The City has been contacted by several individuals concerned about pedestrian crossing on County Road C
to access Acorn Park. The residential area north of County Road C fiam Acorn Park has numerous
children and families who fitiqtndy access Acam Park and must contend with high-volume and lugh
speed ttaffic on County Road C.
BACKGROUND:
The issue of pedestrian safexy in the vicinity of Acorn Park has been apparent for sometime. When the City
Council was discussing the location of the County Road C Pathway, considerable review went into whether
the pathway should be on the north or south side of County Road C. At that time, it was thought that
ultimately a pathway should be placed on the north side of County Road C. However, funding has not been
available for that project.
Without a sidewalk, painted crosswalk, flashing warning signal, or lighted pedestrian interchange, it would
only have a limited effect since there is no connection between the several residential side streets that abut
County Road C.
More recently, the City has installed signage on County Road C, alerting drivers to pedestrian activity.
COUNCIL ACTION REQUESTED:
County Commissioner Jan Wiessner will be at our City Council Work Session to discuss the issues with
the community (potentially concerned neighbors). The range of options may include, a) a sidewalk along
the north side of County Road C, b) a paintod pedestrian crosswalk, c) a flashing pedestrian cxossing
warning, d) a pedestrian activated stop light, e) potentially other options to be determined.
This is not an issue that will be easily resolved and will likely require considerable discussion and further
neighborhood involvement prior to any decision.
RespectfWlysub mi tted.
