Curbside Recycling Program
Guide to Recycling ''
All Roseville residents in the curbside recycling program received the
2009 Guide to Recycling through direct mail. In addition to the basic
instructions for how recycling should be set out, the guide included
information about the economic, social and environmental benefits of
recycling. Eureka Recycling strives to provide residents with information .
about how their recycling efforts benefit their community, their economy ~~
and their environment. We also want to empower them to seek
additional information about any area of recycling or waste reduction that
they are curious about. The annual guide invites them to contact our ~~
hotline to talk with one of our staff.
Direct Education
Eureka Recycling and the City of Roseville share a value that all the material that can be
recycled should be and that material that cannot be recycled should not be collected.
Taking non-recyclable items on a ride in a recycling truck and through a processing facility
not only wastes the fuel and energy to transport and process the material, but it also leaves
the residents with the mistaken impression that the material can be recycled when in fact it
cannot. Eureka Recycling drivers educate residents at the curb using educational tags for
specific problems. In 2009, drivers left approximately 13,5b5 educational tags in recyclers'
bins.
2006 2007 2008 2009
Dri~-zr Tam 9,54=i 1i=i,15f~ ~.3f~~ 13,5f~5
Postcards b50 822 451 X42
Personalized
Letters 30 51 0 3
This is a significant increase in tags used. Our experience has shown that the absolute best
place to educate residents about their recycling program is right at the curb and we work
with our drivers to ensure they take every advantage of every opportunity to provide
additional education. This is not only efficient in that drivers can educate the residents that
are confused, but it also begins a conversation with the residents. All Eureka Recycling's
tags (see examples on page 3) encourage residents to call our hotline where waste reduction
educators are waiting to clear up any confusion about why certain items are not recyclable
or on how their efforts at the curb can have such a important impact on the value of the
material and the environmental benefits of recycling.
