BWSR Meeting ldlinutes <br />August 25, 1998 <br />Page Three <br />Wetlands Committee -Darrell Bruggman reported that the wetlands committee met on August <br />20, the minutes from the meeting were distributed. <br />Agency Reports <br />Jim Anderson, Minnesota Extension Service (11~S), reported that MES has been involved with <br />BWSR and iVIDA regarding a budget initiative for research and education for the drainage issue. <br />Jim reported that by the end of September alI three BWSR/MES education positions will be in <br />place. The New Ulm position will be filled on September 17. MES has made an offer for an <br />extension educator at the West Central experiment station in Moms. Jim stated. that Minnesota <br />has now built education capacity in soil and water conservation issues in Minnesota. <br />itiiark Dittrich, Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA), reported that MDA is working on <br />an LCMR project "Reinventing the Ag Preservation Program." MDA has four LCMR projects. <br />The Feedlot Manure Management Committee is meeting next month. Mark reported that MDA <br />is involved in a biological control study, they are involved in pesticide issues such as <br />grasshoppers and gypsy moth, and MDA is working with composting of pigs. MDA is working <br />with BWSR on RIM. <br />Kelli Johnson, Minnesota Department of Health (tiIDH), reported that MDH is addressing the <br />food borne outbreaks statewide. IvII~H is working on the environmental budget preparation. <br />Kely reported that public facilities authority has issued the first check. for wells. <br />Rod Massey, Pollution Control Agency (PCA), reported that the physical reorganization of PCA <br />has taken place. Rod now has a counterpart in the north, Roger Bork, who may attend BWSR <br />meetings on Rod's behalf. Rod reported that PCA is considering adding a co-location facility in <br />Willmar. <br />Rod Sando, Department of Natural Resources (DNR), reported that DNR's "Natural Resources <br />Issues Day" will be held this evening at the Kelly Inn in St. Paul; he invited board members to <br />attend.. Rod stated that DNR received press regarding meeting facilities. DNR would like to see <br />more focus on better management of Minnesota lakes. DNR chief of fisheries, Jack Skrypek, <br />will be retiring as chief, and reassigned on lake issues. Rod reported that the Minnesota <br />Outdoors Heritage Alliance has polled citizens, DNR has received positive response. Rod met <br />with Dennis Anderson, reporter, and discussed the Minnesota River, Rod asked for BWSR and <br />PCA assistance in summarizing a report and circulate this report to the press stating the positive <br />aspects and accomplishments that have been made to the lrlinnesota River. Rod reported on the <br />trout kill in West Indian Creek in Wabasha County, significant resource loss, need to focus. <br />Wolf round table continues to meet, their next meeting is this week in Duluth. GEIS citizens <br />advisory committee has five meetings scheduled before the lath of September, EQB will revie~,v <br />the scoping document on September 30. <br />
